How can applied linguistics help me become a better language teacher, a better professional?
In Colombia, English teachers focus their classes on giving their students some “tools” in order to achieve the ability of speaking, writing and reading, which are the centers for communicating in L2. Those tools can be changed through applied linguistic.
If we, as teachers, invest our time in learning different ways to teach the language and give our students broad views of the language talking into account the main subject: linguistic learning – to be precise, morphology, phonology, phonetics, syntax and semantics – they will explore the nature of the language and its relationship with the society. Through this, students can increase their motivation and their perception about English language. Moreover, it requires a lot of time to study, responsibility and interest. Including these topics in a curriculum, it is not a piece of cake but it is not impossible!
